PART 15 - Prostheses
This part of the Lifetime Care and Support Guidelines is issued under section 93 of the Lifetime Care and Support (Catastrophic Injuries) Act 2014.
To avoid requirements that might be unreasonable in the circumstances on any participant, the LTCS Commissioner may waive observance of any part or parts of these LTCS Guidelines.
Policy
The LTCS Commissioner will fund the reasonable and necessary cost of prostheses for a participant who has had an amputation as a result of the motor accident injury.
Definitions
Prosthesis: an artificial substitute for a missing part, such as a leg, used for functional or cosmetic reasons, or both.
Providers: refers to accredited medical prescribers, amputee clinics and limb manufacturers.
- Prosthetic services funded by the Commissioner
Services should only be provided by Prosthetic and Orthotic Service (ACT) or by providers accredited by the NSW Prosthetic Limb Service (NSW PLS) Guidelines for Accreditation of Amputee Units, Prescribing Medical Specialists, Prostheses and Prosthetic Manufacturers (October 2007), or the most current version thereof.
The LTCS Commissioner will fund the reasonable and necessary costs of prostheses for participants with an amputation where:
- Prescriptions provided to the LTCS Commissioner are issued by Prosthetic and Orthotic Service (ACT) or by prescribers accredited by the NSW PLS;
- Participants receive clinic services from Prosthetic and Orthotic Service (ACT) or by clinics with NSW PLS accreditation;
- Services are provided by Prosthetic and Orthotic Service (ACT) or by manufacturers accredited by NSW PLS; and
- Services are provided by Prosthetic and Orthotic Service (ACT) or by prosthetists accredited by NSW PLS.
