Learn about your MAI insurance policy

Your MAI insurance policy

If you own a motor vehicle, a person is required by law to purchase personal injuries insurance (also known as Motor Accident Injuries (MAI) insurance) as part of their motor vehicle registration. Your MAI insurance policy covers people injured in a motor accident, regardless of who was at fault. This includes the driver who may have caused the personal injury, along with injury to other people, such as passengers, pedestrians, other drivers, pillion riders and cyclists.

Your MAI insurance policy is set by legislation, which means that the policy is exactly the same for every person who registers a motor vehicle and pays for an MAI insurance policy. The premium that you pay is based on the vehicle class of your vehicle.

The MAI insurance policy does not cover property damage to your vehicle or other vehicles or property involved in an accident. You need separate insurance for vehicle damage. This kind of insurance is usually called comprehensive or third-party property insurance and is purchased from insurers as an optional, separate product. It is not part of your vehicle registration costs. For more information, see our overview of the different types of motor vehicle insurance 1.7 MB

Interstate motor accidents

Your Motor Accident Injuries insurance policy will indemnify you for an accident that occurs interstate if another person is injured and you are at fault. However, if you are injured in the accident, what you receive in benefits or compensation for your injuries depends on the applicable scheme in the State or Territory where the accident occurs, and not of the ACT MAI Scheme. Any person travelling interstate may wish to consider taking out other forms of insurance to cover health costs associated with personal injuries, such as private health or travel insurance.
