Infrastructure Australia

Infrastructure Australia is an independent statutory body that provides infrastructure research and advice to all levels of government, industry and the community in Australia. Infrastructure Australia develops and maintains the Infrastructure Priority List (the Priority List) and evaluates infrastructure proposals for investment in nationally significant infrastructure. It also supports the development of quality infrastructure investment proposals by undertaking research on the nation’s key challenges and opportunities, setting the agenda on long-term opportunities for infrastructure reform, and providing guidance on best-practice infrastructure development.

Infrastructure Australia identifies and prioritises national and state-level infrastructure proposals to address nationally significant infrastructure problems and opportunities and includes them on the Priority List. Nationally significant infrastructure is defined as transport infrastructure, energy infrastructure, communications infrastructure and water infrastructure in which investment or further investment will materially improve national productivity. (Footnote: As per The Infrastructure Australia Act 2008.  ) Infrastructure Australia also considers social infrastructure, such as health, social housing, education, cultural and community facilities. Further information about the types of proposals that Infrastructure Australia assesses can be found on the Infrastructure Australia website.

Infrastructure Australia updates its website regularly with proposals that have been included on the Priority List.

Infrastructure Australia evaluates and prioritises infrastructure proposals based on a rigorous evaluation of their strategic fit, societal impact, and deliverability. The Priority List helps to guide Australian Government decision-makers on the most needed infrastructure investments that address nationally significant gaps and needs in our infrastructure networks. However, a project does not need to be on the Priority List to be considered for Australian Government funding. Similarly, if a project is on the Priority List, this does not necessarily result in Australian Government funding.

Purpose of this section

Agencies should consider submitting their Tier 1 projects to Infrastructure Australia for possible inclusion on the Priority List. This section maps the key activities of the Capital Framework to the stages of the Infrastructure Australia Assessment Framework.

Infrastructure Australia welcomes submissions at any stage of its Assessment Framework. Projects included on the Priority List are identified depending on the stage that the Proposal has reached, in line with the Assessment Framework stages (refer to Infrastructure Australia Assessment Framework mapping section on next page for further information). Project Teams who submit a project to Infrastructure Australia in Stage 2 or later must ensure they include the relevant information to address the preceding stages.

The requirements of the Infrastructure Australia Assessment Framework can change. For the most up-to-date information refer to https://www.infrastructureaustralia.gov.au/publications/assessment-framework.
