Unclaimed trust money held by ACT Treasury

ACT Treasury manages unclaimed trust money as defined under the Financial Management Act 1996. 'Trust monies' as defined under the Act ARE HELD by ACT Treasury and includes money:

  • received by the Territory pending the outcome of a dispute or completion of a transaction where money may become repayable
  • paid to a Territory court for possible repayment to the payee or third party because of any Act, order, instruction, or authority
  • belonging or owed to any person that is collected by the Territory through agreement
  • paid to the Territory in trust for any other lawful purpose.

Unclaimed trust monies that ARE NOT HELD by ACT Treasury include the following:

  • unclaimed superannuation
  • bank account balances
  • life insurance policies
  • company shares and dividends
  • unclaimed TAB dividends.

How to make a claim for unclaimed trust money held by ACT Treasury

You can make a claim with ACT Treasury for unclaimed trust monies that are held by the Territory. Complete the following application form to prepare your claim.

When preparing your application, remember to:

  • review the checklist included in the form
  • supply all required supporting documentation.

Before submitting your application, confirm that you are applying to the right organisation. Not applying to the right organisation may result in delays with the return of the unclaimed money.

Unclaimed trust monies not held by ACT Treasury

Certain unclaimed trust monies ARE NOT HELD by ACT Treasury. Please refer to the organisations below for information on:

  • superannuation
  • bank account balances
  • life insurance policies
  • company shares and dividends
  • unclaimed TAB dividends
  • other types of unclaimed monies.

You can make claims with the Public Trustee and Guardian for unclaimed monies related to company shares and dividends. It also administers monies that have been declared as unclaimed under the Unclaimed Money Act 1950, the Agents Act 2003 and the Legal Profession Act 2006.

You can make claims with ASIC for unclaimed monies from:

  • authorised deposit taking institutions
  • life insurance companies
  • benefit fund friendly societies
  • institutions providing first home saver accounts
  • and companies with unclaimed money or property.

You can make claims for unpaid monies on bets place on the Canberra TAB. You must make your claim within twelve months of the event from a TAB outlet in the ACT.

The ACT Government does not receive any monies from unclaimed bets placed with Tabcorp (TAB) and is not involved in the payment of any betting refunds to TAB customers.
