Green Bins

Municipal Services are expanding in this Budget.

  • Funds are provided in 2016–17 for the first garden waste bins for the Territory
  • Weston Creek will be a trial site for the green bin roll-out

More for Roads & Transport

Funding for roads and transport infrastructure includes:

  • Completing the duplication of the Cotter Road between the Tuggeranong Parkway and Yarralumla Creek
  • Intersection upgrades on Hindmarsh Drive and Launceston Street as well as Hindmarsh Drive and Eggleston Crescent. These works will improve both the safety and the flow of traffic.
  • Investment in a new Woden Bus Depot to improve run times and maintenance, and increase efficiency
  • Woden Bus interchange upgrades including improved footpaths and lighting
  • $10.9 million for new buses and to trial electric buses
  • New footpaths and cycle lanes in Woden Town Centre

Parks & leisure

This Budget funds new and upgraded environmental and community facility projects.

  • A new pool at Stromlo with construction expected to commence in 2017
  • A new dog park in Weston Creek
  • $1 million to upgrade the Coombs ponds
  • Upgrades to Stromlo Forest Park and the Tidbinbilla Visitor Centre

Investing in Health & Education

Initiatives to fund health and education facilities include:

  • 54 new health staff for the 21 new treatment spaces as part of the Canberra Hospital Emergency Department expansion
  • Expanding trauma and intensive care services
  • Two more Neonatal Intensive Care cots and eight new staff to care for sick babies
  • Upgrade to teaching spaces at The Woden School
  • A new food technology facility at Alfred Deakin High School

Investing in Health, Education & Safer Families

The ACT invests more per person in health and education than any other jurisdiction.

Health

  • $139 million for 170 new health staff including 22 doctors, 91 more nurses and 34 more allied health professionals
  • $29 million to expand the Canberra Hospital Emergency Department
  • $9.96 million for an expanded trauma service and intensive care
  • $55.9 million for mental health
  • $6.32 million for outpatient and palliative care

Education

  • $31.2 million for school upgrades
  • $10 million to take our school system digital

Safer families

  • Additional funding for the Domestic Violence Crisis Service & Canberra Rape Crisis Centre
  • More resources for police, courts & legal aid

Concessions

  • $35.1 million in additional concessions for low income households
