More Roads and Transport for Gungahlin

This Budget invests in more infrastructure in Gungahlin.

  • Completing the duplication of Horse Park Drive from Mulligan's Flat to the Federal Highway
  • $4.5 million to expand Ernest Cavanagh St
  • Light Rail will commence services by early 2019
  • Light Rail Business Link to support local businesses to be 'project ready'
  • Detailed design for a pedestrian priority zone in Hibberson St
  • $10.9 million for new buses and to trial electric buses
  • Gungahlin will share in a range of upgrades to promote walking and riding to school

Health & liveability in Canberra's north

Funding is provided for upgrades in health services and community facilities for Gungahlin.

  • A major upgrade to Yerrabi Ponds playground and Gungahlin will share in funding for new shade sails, play equipment and park upgrades
  • An additional specialist physician in the Emergency Department at Calvary Hospital
  • North Canberra to share in $100.5 million to upgrade and maintain facilities at Canberra Hospital, Calvary Hospital and other health buildings

Expanding Gungahlin's Schools

This Budget funds more spaces for students and upgraded facilities.

  • A $20 million investment to expand school capacity to accommodate 680 new students
    • New teaching spaces, an expanded gym and new hardcourts at Amaroo
    • New teaching spaces at Harrison
    • New teaching spaces including expanded preschool facilities at Neville Bonner
    • New preschool facilities at Palmerston
    • Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) scholarships for teachers across Canberra

Tax Reform

This Budget funds tax reforms including:

  • Tax cuts for small and medium businesses—the payroll tax threshold is being raised to $2 million
  • Stamp Duty continues to be cut—$7,040 less for a $500,000 home in Gungahlin
  • Taxes on insurance abolished in this Budget

Investing in Health, Education & Safer Families

The ACT invests more per person in health and education than any other jurisdiction.

Health

  • $139 million for 170 new health staff including 22 doctors, 91 more nurses and 34 more allied health professionals
  • $29 million to expand the Canberra Hospital Emergency Department
  • $9.96 million for an expanded trauma service and intensive care
  • $55.9 million for mental health
  • $6.32 million for outpatient and palliative care

Education

  • $31.2 million for school upgrades
  • $10 million to take our school system digital

Safer families

  • Additional funding for the Domestic Violence Crisis Service & Canberra Rape Crisis Centre
  • More resources for police, courts & legal aid

Concessions

  • $35.1 million in additional concessions for low income households
