The ACT is a leader in advancing the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, intersex and queer people. We are working to make Canberra the most LGBTIQ welcoming city in Australia.
The establishment of the Office for LGBTIQ Affairs in 2017 demonstrates our commitment to social inclusion. The Office is leading our efforts across Government to increase the visibility and inclusion of our LGBTIQ community.
The first ACT LGBTIQ Strategic Plan, to be released in 2018-19, will set out key directions and priorities for continuing to advance LGBTIQ rights, support and inclusion. We will implement the Plan in 2018-19 through:
- Delivering a new community grants scheme to increase LGBTIQ visibility and inclusion.
- Supporting trans, gender diverse and intersex led peer support, education and resources.
- Collaborating with intersex organisations to plan how we can implement the Darlington Consensus Statement in the ACT.
- Continuing to promote the health and wellbeing of LGBTIQ Canberrans through further funding to support community-based agencies with innovative approaches to inclusion.
- Funding social research to ensure future decisions and services for LGBTIQ youth in Canberra are substantiated by data.
- Honouring the contributions and achievements of LGBTIQ Canberrans through a research project on the history of LGBTIQ activism in the ACT since 1969.
