Compulsory Third Party Insurance

CTP Premiums in the ACT

CTP premiums are subject to Government regulation to ensure that the interests of the community are protected; and premiums are no higher than they need to be to properly compensate persons injured in motor vehicle accidents while maintaining the viability of the CTP scheme. However, CTP premiums are not Government fees or charges since they are paid in their entirety to a licensed insurer.

CTP premiums are based on past claims experience and  insurance companies’ projections of the likely number and cost of claims during the underwriting period. The premium charged also depends on the type of vehicle and whether it is used for private purposes or for business purposes where a GST input tax credit is claimable.

CTP premiums charged by NRMA Insurance for most premium classes will increase by an average of 8% with effect from 16 August 2011. For a car used for private purposes, the increase will be $39.10, from $487.50 to $526.60. You can click on a table showing the new NRMA Insurance premiums for all classes below.

The main reason for the increase is growth in the size of award payments, including movements in average wages (a significant part of claims payments), partially offset by a decrease in the overall number of claims.

Premiums applicable prior to 2 March 2009 are set out in Schedule 1 to the Road Transport (Third-Party Insurance) Regulation 2000 .

Important information

Your registration renewal notices will now look different because of the expectation that there will be more than one CTP provider in the ACT in the near future. The registration renewal notice has been redesigned to cater for this. For more information about this click here.
